The Fitness & Health Bloggers Conference: It’s All About the People

When I won a free pass to the Fitness & Health Bloggers Conference courtesy of Fitarella (@JacqCarly), I couldn’t quite believe I was going to meet online friends, hob knob with big names in the blogging arena, and learn more about what I love, right here in Colorado. I was both nervous and excited, and also committed to sharing what I learned.

Kris (@Krazy_Kris), Jen (@LeanBodyPilates), and myself

I’ll go into more detail about the sessions in upcoming posts, plus you can check out my Facebook page to see what I said about the sessions live (some good dialog about controversial subjects). But right now I want to give you a taste of what the conference was like from my perspective.

If you’re part of the fitness community, you know what I’m talking about when I say they’re a generous bunch. We support each other in our experiences, journeys, blogs, whatever you can think of. No matter if you want to learn to lift weights, lose weight, become a fitness, holistic, or nutrition professional, or just want to connect with others who love your sport, you’ll find plenty of love.

Dinner at Whole Foods was gourmet-style.

Meeting these people in person is a both an honor for me and validating (I even got to work out in real life with my good online friend Kris Beal, @Krazy_Kris). These are the most real, honest, down-to-earth people you’ll meet, including the “big bloggers” who have made it big so to speak. We’re all learning about ourselves, fitness, and blogging, and we also have the desire to share our stories and/or our knowledge.

This conference was mostly about blogging – for example, search engine optimization, working with public relations companies, and writing books for example. There were myriad opportunities for recreation and exercise in beautiful Boulder, CO, fitness breaks, and one very informative session about nutritional myths. I suspect many of the session slides will be posted on the FHBC11 web site – I’ll share these when I see them.

Leah Segedie from was a star presenter. That's Ryan from in front!

All throughout I loved connecting with my fellow blogging/nutritional/fitness enthusiasts, and I was quite prolific in my tweeting about what I was hearing.

And now for some personal impressions:

  • People love Boulder. Many commented on how happy and friendly people are there and how beautiful it is. And on two days the weather was merely in the 80’s… a nice respite for some.
  • I was infinitely impressed by Leah Segedie (, @bookieboo). A charismatic and down-to-earth person who is endlessly quotable and lovable, Leah shared valuable information about the social media world and had time for everyone.
  • Nutritionists have a tough job. Much of what they know scientifically remains controversial with the public. Witness the discussion on my Facebook page when I quoted facts from the “Carbs are not the Devil and Other Myths.”
  • We all have insecurities about trying new things, but the people at this conference were right there doing it. They tried yoga, martial arts, mountain biking, running, and in the Most Strange But Wonderful category, Kangoo.
  • I am not motivated to work out at ALL when I’m away from home. Even when presented with fabulous workout opportunities, I’d rather do something else. This is ok with me. I work out without fail at home and my body will survive five days without pumping iron.
  • Lots of samples from the vendors.

I loved hanging out with my beautiful buddy Kris as well as Jenn (@LeanBodyPilates), Casey (@hippiehealthnut), and Emily (@EmilyInProgress). But there are so many more I met and connected with that I can’t begin to list them all here, including Jen (@jenmyronuk), Kia (@bodhi_bear), Toni (@toni_carey and @blackgirlsrun), Jason (@CookTrainEatRice), and Alicia (@AliciaGetsFit ). I <3 you all!

  • The live blogging event was REALLY fun. Vendors rotated among tables selling their product for five minute. We in turn had to tweet or post our thoughts about the product in that timeframe. The vendors were very generous with samples and we even got to taste test organic tequila (Casa Noble). Especially liked the Rudi’s all-natural multi-grain bread, Detour protein bars, and cheddar Popchips. As a sidenote, Kris Beal (@Krazy_Kris) provided us all with yummy wine to try on our last evening courtesy of SIP. I loved the @paraisovineyards Chardonnay!
  • The public bathrooms at the Marriott Boulder are sumptuous. This was not a fancy hotel but I always looked forward to entering the stalls that included sinks and fuzzy towels. Some of us even hung out there and exchanged cards for a Colorado meet up!
  • If you’ve ever thought of going to a fitness or blogging conference, consider this one next year and/or Fitbloggin. I would really miss you if you didn’t – please go. Getting to know you all is the best part of these conferences.

Stay tuned… more to come, my fitness friends.

  1. Are you going to make your way to Fitbloggin’ next year? It was a pleasure to meet and connect with you. And please let me know if there is any way I can help support the meetup you are trying to do. I know the conference is trying to “organize” one for people that were at the conference but I like the idea of an actual blogger doing one better.

  2. What a wonderful weekend! I am so happy and fortunate to get to know you, and such an amazing group of women. There is so much to learn from each of you!

  3. Let me know if there’s a CO meetup!

  4. Love this recap.

So, funny story: I saw you repeatedly at the conference, and tweeted with you, and never put together your Twitter profile picture with real-life you! OY. Apparently, hats throw me off? Oops. Anywho, hope to *actually* connect with you at the local meet-up soon! 🙂

    • @Kia: Yes, I’m working on a Colorado meet up :). Let’s do it together, I like the idea of bloggers doing it too.
@Emily: Mutual – you said it well xo.
@Kerri: I will! Would love to meet you, heard good things 😉
@Katie: Argh! I know, I was tweeting people at the conf who I never ended up meeting. The positive is that a small conference like that lets us have a better chance of it anyway. Hope to see you at the meet up, not sure when yet.

  5. Wow, it sounds like you had a great time! I’m so glad you got to go!

  6. Yes – Yes- Yes! It is ALL about the people – and how did we miss some folks? I’m not sure – I’m kind of ditzy though – sigh….
SOOOOOO much fun hanging out with you, working out with you (lunge/balance excluded), and just giggling like old friends.
I’m having so much fun reading everyone’s recap – YIKES – I gotta pour me some coffee and get on it!

  7. I’m both a Boulder native, and a fitness native. How/why I missed this I don’t know. That, and that it appears you were surrounded by a good number of smokin’ hot women gets me a wee bit riled.

But seriously….? “Looked forward to entering the stalls”…..? That is a woman who’s priorities are set well in stone!

    God bless ya Kitten….!

    • @Kris: You were an amazing roomie! You know I adore you… so lucky to have met IRL and have you as a sistah.
@Roy: LOL you really do keep me laughing Roy. Ok, did I mention that the stalls each had their own sinks and fluffy towels? You could stay in there forever! And how DID you miss it… Next time? Please?

  8. It sounds like you had a fantastic time! I am so hoping to be able to make it to one of these events sooner or later 🙂

  11. Looks like you had a BLAST! Really wish I could have been there. I can’t believe I missed fluffy towels…

I’ve only been out there during the winter months. Same place/time next year?
