Personal Training Online: How and Why it Works

Have you ever browsed through a fitness forum and felt overwhelmed by all the opinions and speculation? Even when all the commenters are following the same one-size-fits all program, they’re often getting their answers from their own personal experience or the same prepackaged program.

You can certainly find free workouts on the Internet and plenty of advice as well. But when I see these programs or workouts,  I wonder:

  • What if I have an old injury I have to be careful with or a medical condition? Will this workout be ok for someone who has low-back pain, a shoulder that hurts, or knee that acts up?
  • What if I’m just not sure if I’m doing something correctly and no one else seems to know the right way? Who do I trust?
  • How do I know if this celebrity or expert isn’t just trying to sell more supplements, accessories, or DVDs?
  • Will I really see results with this program? Does it fit my goals?

Online personal trainerWhy use an online personal trainer?

An online personal trainer asks you detailed questions that reveal exactly what will impact your success. An online trainer performs assessments to find out more about your uniqueness, including your strengths and weaknesses, and individual biomechanics. They also identify thinking or lifestyle patterns that might be sabotaging you and help you learn healthier habits.

Here are a few other things an online trainer can do:

  • Give you a customized, progressive program based on your own distinct characteristics and goals.
  • Monitor your progress and adjust your program along the way, helping you work through plateaus and keep your motivation up.
  • Keep you accountable to your goals.
  • Help you set realistic goals and reach them in a safe, timely way.
  • Take into account your own unique health concerns.
  • Teach you about nutrition and calorie tracking, how to use equipment and techniques properly and correct form.
  • Ultimately, help you become responsible for your own health for your entire lifetime.

How does personal training online differ from in-person training?

Maybe you’ve heard of online personal training but have no idea how it works. Here are a few reasons why virtual training can be a good idea:

  • More flexibility. You can train whenever and wherever you want. If you travel frequently, train at home, or live in a remote location, virtual training is much more accessible than in-person training. An online trainer can even give you a program to accommodate the exact equipment you have at your home.
  • No intimidation factor. If being around a lot of fit, muscular people intimidates you, then having a trainer via email/phone can let you focus better on your goals.
  • More economical. You’ll still get many of the benefits of in-person training but at a lower cost.
  • Personalized service using technology. Online trainers can obviously communicate with you via email, Skype, and phone. But they can also send you videos and ask you to do the same. For my own online training clients, sending a short video of themselves is useful for assessments or to check their form.
Clients still get the same guidance, accountability, and motivation but on their own schedule and turf. They’re still accountable to me even if they never see me in person. I also provide lots of written guides and tools to help them succeed.

online personal trainingWhat can you accomplish with an online trainer?

You can reach any goal with a personal trainer online that you can with an trainer in person:

  • Lean, muscular physique
  • Sexy and defined arms, legs, and glutes
  • Increased strength
  • Overall conditioning that lets you function at a higher level
  • A stronger core that not only makes you proud but protects you from low-back injury
  • Losing the weight at last
  • Improving sports performance
  • Strengthening a weak area or breaking through a plateau
  • Increased self-confidence and energy

I see many people online spinning their wheels when it comes to reaching their goals. If you’re ready to see real results, maybe it’s time to hire a professional!
